Watercolors

Watercolor NutcrackerArt has always been a joy in my life. I started painting early in life – in fact, my first pleasant memories are of drawing, coloring and dreaming on paper. My wish is to share that joy with you.

Historical data indicates that watercolor painting has its roots in ancient times. Its manifestations are said to include the cave paintings of Paleolithic Europe and the manuscript illuminations dating back to Egyptian times and, later on, the European Middle Ages. Of course, those artists didn’t have the wonderful array of paints and brushes to choose from that we have today! They created their own mediums – using ashes, soil and plant dyes, etc., to achieve the results they wanted. Ancient Egyptians used water-based paints to decorate the walls of temples and tombs and created some of the first works on paper, made of papyrus.

I’ve found watercolor to be a wonderful medium because it allows all types of expression – and if you’re like me and love to work fast, watercolor is great as it dries fast and you can finish a painting in one setting. Because it is water-based it’s a very relaxed and unpredictable art form at times. Watercolor is often called an unforgiving medium, but an awesome secret method called the unifying wash allows you to manipulate the paint to your advantage.

Painting in watercolor can be frustrating as well. The paints can have a mind Watercolor flowersof their own and sometimes show little interest in the effect you are trying to achieve. On the other hand, watercolor is a medium of paint that will add life in your painting. If you findĀ  a good art course and follow the tips for using watercolor you can be able to master the art of your watercolor painting.

One thing to keep in mind – watercolor is a comparatively perishable medium; it is vulnerable to sunlight, dust, and contact with glass surfaces. However, watercolor is a wonderfully versatile medium as well, and you can change its look quite easily with additives and other materials to give it a more textural appearance. The samples below demonstrate some of these textural effects.

Watercolor painting is very different from oil or acrylic painting where paint is applied for white areas. Watercolor is often combined with gouache (or “bodycolor”), an opaque water-based paint containing a white element derived from chalk, lead, or zinc oxide.

Watercolor is a challenging and rewarding medium and the work is simply awesome if done well. This site will offer tips and obtaining watercolor art, becoming a watercolor artist and will offer you sources for all things watercolor.
